Stoned Again
The door opened at the behest of our hairy friend, revealing a short foyer beyond leading to yet more imposing doors. The chamber also was lined with more impassive stony faces that we strongly suspected would spew fiery death if we transgressed, for such was our best reading of one of the many written clues we had gathered en route. We proceeded to run the gauntlet, cautiously edging to the next doorway. Like the outer doors, these slid seamlessly into the rocky walls revealing the octagonal chamber promised by our ancient writings.

The centre of this room contained a pillar, rising from the muddy floor. It was set in a well as concentric steps descended into the centre from every side. An exit was set into the left hand wall and a great mural of the triple peaked mountain above dominated the wall opposite.

We moved around the edge of the room on the highest level looking down at what was surely the location of the second doomstone. Opening the west doors revealed the room where we had recently escaped death at the hands of our trigger happy wizard, at least this meant a definite escape route lay before us.

Wading through the mud revealed no further clues, but when Snorri questioned the pillar about the doomstone, a cryptic response echoed round the chamber. Apparently the device had once issued auguries in response to the denizens’ questions. Unfortunately when Snorri tried the blood sacrifice technique it only served to summon another elemental that coalesced from shadowy spirit forms that emerged from the eight facets of the room.

The stony creature attacked Snorri, and I moved to protect him. Getz, rather than attacking too decided to heroically try to unleash the doomstone against the creature. With no effect. Even more heroically, our wizard ran out through the west doors as the south door slammed shut. Beyond we could here the distinctive sounds of the grinning faces turning the entry hall into an inferno intended to destroy anyone fleeing the room.

Snorri was caught a solid blow that knocked him into the mud face down shredding his armour in the process. He lay very still. This left me facing the stony demon drawing its fire so to speak. Getz joined in the attack and the wizard also fired in a few spells that enabled us to overcome the creature with some difficulty. We rushed to Snorri, fearing the worst, but he groaned piteously and snorted mud from his nostrils must of which by accident or design spattered the elf.

This left us still with the puzzle of the central pillar, which we were reliably informed by our mage reeked of magic. I decided that the best solution was to dismantle it gently with my trusty two handed pick and I proceeded to smash it to pieces, eventually revealing the form of the second doomstone.

This one was an even spikier device than its brother and the wizard lost no time attuning to it as did a couple of other party members. I tried too, but it did nothing for me. The circumstances of its discovery and the brown hue users gained when holding it confirmed our belief that this was the dwarves’ earth crystal.

A shadowy dwarf apparition then appeared to round off a busy day whispering about the location of the third crystal – a monastery near Winters Teeth Pass to the north. So some days journey back tracking our route would be called for.

We journeyed from the shrine; I was reunited with Silver Strine who had suffered no ill effects from a few days grazing above ground. The elf’s bow provided a somewhat goat heavy diet for the next few days and just as importantly some fresh clothing as winter continued to draw on.

We re crossed the river and made our way north again meeting up with a trade caravan again which enabled us to revisit our mathematical skills and stock up on combustibles and rations. Our dwarf seemed much changed by his near death experience, and took it upon himself to liberate a keg of ale during our trade negotiations, fortunately unobserved.

Back to the pass after a few more days with the snow lying deep already. One or two party members had vague recollections of the location of the monastery of Airy that the dwarf apparition had spoken of and we struck off the trail north east.

Travel was uneventful, but then, an event: As the terrain funnelled us into a narrow pass the mage sensed magic, some sort of alarm or sensory magic, possibly connected to some sort of trap. The elf scout forward, especially checking a cave to the left where some kind of animal evidently laired, possibly the wolves whose howling had increasingly accompanied us as we left civilisation further behind.

We continued forward revealing the inadequacies of our elf’s scouting ability: First half of the narrow valley floor collapsed depositing a couple of party members into a huge pit. As this occurred a half dozen wolves emerged from the apparently harmless cavern behind us.

The elf drilled the leader cleanly with a deadly arrow, then the wizard dissolved four with a blast from his doomstone. The last wolf fell too and it seemed that we had triumphed, but then a mass of skeletons emerged from the rocks ahead and moved towards us. I was rooted to the spot by fear briefly, but then Snorri and I engaged the attackers as elf arrows and magic energy bolts took a steady toll of the undead.

Snorri in particular seemed fearless and we despatched the bony horde with little difficulty. The questions now: Who set these defences to prevent our approach? Why were they so easy to overcome compared to recent opposition? Do they protect the monastery for which we search or some other destination or foe? Why does Getz suddenly seem so much more attractive and intelligent? What is the significance of wolves which seem to have been the subject of recent rumours? Is it a good idea for us to be gathering doomstones in any case? Where are the returning orcs? Are the doomstones a threat to us? Is the wizard falling under their spell? Why is Snorri suddenly so reckless and carefree? Why I Geoff always late? Why don’t we have anything better to do on Halloween? The answers to all, some or none of these questions (may) lie ahead.

My Lord

I bring news of ill omens. There are stirrings in the Vaults Mountains. It would seem that the Blood Axe alliance has risen once more. What their agenda is unknown to me, but their motive will be the same as usual - blood my lord, blood of your people.

I also fear there is unrest amongst the dwarves too. Some whisper of an ancient crown being discovered or some such nonesense that they typically fight over. I fear that they will do little to oppose the Orcs while distracted by their selfish needs. Thusly I ask to dispatch the Coldfire Knights to inestigate these happenings at once my Lord.

As for the Border Princes problem, I suggest we do as we always have my Lord - let them fight amongst themselves, after all their internal strifes will always keep the massed Orc incursion at bay. Even the Greenskins are not that crazy

As for the strange stones - think nothing of it my Lord. Such people that lay claim to rocks of power will next have you believe that the world is round and that the moon is made of cheese. Totally ridiculous.
