Another Key Search

We rested up and then moved on from the scene of the hydra slaying, back towards the room with the statues that our thievish pair had scouted earlier. The room was huge, extending beyond the range of our light, we could see bugbear statues, scattered across it, some 12, or were they? They were perfectly lifelike, but absolutely frozen, more like replicas than statues.

As we entered the statues began to animate. Four at first but you could bet more would follow. Zionestes went left and Barakor right, heading towards the biggest and meanest looking one. Everyone else piled in as more and more animated and attacked, several more emerging from the darkness.

Ripven got his spiritual hammer going and I fired off magic missiles, they were resilient but began to fall, Roscoe got some good backstabbing going and Zionestes was proving highly resilient with his new armour though not doing much damage. Barakor killed the chief eventually and I burned another with my burning hands, our weretiger proved very deadly and we were triumphant at last.

There was a sarcophagus deep in the room and three of us lifted off the lid revealing gems, copper and silver, not vast amounts but enough to get Eldras and Roscoe’s juices flowing it seemed. There was also a strange metal object which registered as magical to our swords.

We waited out our healing and spell restoration period before exploring the passage westward. I used read languages to decipher some script on the sarcophagus, but it appeared of little value. We headed deeper into the dungeon, eventually reaching a mysterious mirrored wall which had an apparent slot in the centre that fitted one quarter of the mysterious metal piece we had found.

Four towers, four slots, four keys. Our quest was it seemed, taking shape. We had no choice but to fall back, which unfortunately meant passing through the room where our passage triggered various monster summonings. Eldras used his slippers to avoid touching the floor and successfully made the other side without triggering any arrivals.

Crossing the room one at a time though just triggered the summonings again. We found that the room reset if all door were closed, though we had to avoid rust monsters, giant spiders and snakes as part of the learning process. We decided that I would learn two web spells and block off most of the room, leaving a narrow passage for the rest to run through.

Monsters that arrived on either side would be trapped or delayed by the webs; and we planned to use spiritual hammers to hold up any that got through. We all ran through one at a time but not before Ripven, Eldras and Holly had to cope with some centipedes and leucrotta that menaced whilst I slept to gain the web spells. Ripven used a glyph of warding that helped initially but Holly put in most of the fighting, Ripven fortunately survived two poisonous centipede bites.

We continued out of the south east quadrant, but relaxed too soon, another attack by giant lizards to overcome, then as we entered the North West tower again, three wights attacked us. Fortunately Ripven’s spiritual hammer kept one off Barakor and Roscoe cut another down, Zionestes finished them off with a turn that drove two away allowing them to be finished off easily.

We descended again, coming to a room that contained a great crystal ball. There was an inscription on the pedestal that bore it and when I read out the words creatures were summoned to attack me. Despite this I continued to summon them, first a carnivorous giant ape, then an ice toad, then a minotaur, and finally an owlbear.

Roscoe did great work backstabbing, he had the advantage that he could get under the globe for a backstab. I took a few hits for the team especially from the ape and minotaur but we dealt with them successfully. As the last fell the southern door opened and the globe shrank down to the size of a traditional crystal ball, which we scooped up avariciously of course.

We rested here again with glyph protection, only to be on the receiving end of a number of attacks: Lizards, a gelatinous cube, green slime all menaced us whilst we rested. The cube had a lot of jewellery and gems inside, plus a potion and a robe with many pockets that I took, passing my robe to Ripven.

We headed south again from the room with its melted door which the green slime had destroyed before we burned it. Beyond the second door off the corridor Roscoe heard voices. We broke into the room and attacked two ogre magi we found there, but one got off a cone of cold that badly injured Roscoe, Barakor, Holly and I. Holly went down critically hurt, mercifully restored by Ripven’s healing staff.

With both ogres dead we did recover some more treasure, but we need time to rest and recover again, Roscoe had almost been killed and even the powerful Barakor was sorely hurt. This place is dangerous, and we still only have one of what are presumably four keys. How we miss the amber mist…
